UNESCO included Nizhny Novgorod in the list of Top 100 cities in the world which are of great historical and cultural value.

There are more than 600 unique historic, architectural, and cultural monuments in Nizhny Novgorod. The historic center of the city, despite significant restructuring, has a significant number of historic civil buildings of the 18 – early 20 centuries, including a lot of monuments of wooden architecture.

History
In 1221, Russian Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich of Vladimir, founded a wooden fort at the confluence of the Volga and the Oka rivers. The settlement was named Nizhny Novgorod.
In 1350, the town became the capital of an independent Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod principality, which occupied a vast territory and competed with the Moscow principality. In 1392 Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod principality was annexed to the Moscow principality.
